Acupuncture Overview
Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is considered one of five branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which also includes herbal therapy, food therapy, energetic movement, and Tuina massage. According to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) theory, the presence of a disease indicates an imbalance or disharmony in the body. Acupuncture aims to restore normal balance to the body by identifying the disease “pattern” and using very small needles to stimulate special points on and within the body that lie along pathways called meridians. Western medical science has shown that these points correspond to regions of the body with a very high density of nerve fibers, blood vessels, lymphatics, and mast cells.
Benefits of Acupuncture
Stimulation of acupuncture points causes the body to release pain-relieving neurotransmitters, increase local blood flow, improve immune responses, as well as increase the activity of stem cells to help damaged tissues heal and repair. Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions in animals and can be used in conjunction with Western medical treatments, such as pharmaceutical medications and surgery when needed, to give patients the best possible health outcomes. There will be occasions when Western medicine alone cannot fully resolve a pet’s health issue, and there will be conditions which cannot be cured with Eastern medicine alone, but when combined, they are extremely powerful.
What to Expect
Each acupuncture session involves taking a detailed history and performing an exam so that an accurate TCVM diagnosis can be made. Once the diagnosis is made, appropriate acupuncture points will be selected and needles will be inserted to stimulate those points for 5-30 minutes. Typically, 3-8 treatments will be necessary to achieve desired results, depending on the chronicity and complexity of the problem. The initial appointment is scheduled for 90 minutes and follow-up appointments are 45 minutes. Long appointment times are necessary, as it is vital to keep refining the TCVM diagnosis at each appointment as treatments progress. Herbal therapies or dietary supplements may also be recommended, depending upon the condition. If needed, additional Western medical testing may be recommended, such as bloodwork, urinalysis, or imaging to further aid in diagnosis and treatment.

Chiropractic Overview
Spinal manipulation and “bonesetting” have a long history throughout the world across many cultures and continents. However, the chiropractic profession in the United States was officially developed in the late nineteen century. The purpose of chiropractic care is to keep the body’s muscles, joints, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissues, and internal organs functioning in optimal condition so that the body can maintain its own inherent state of health. Chiropractors treat “subluxations”, which is different from a true joint luxation in which a joint has been displaced from its natural anatomic position. A “subluxation” simply means that a joint is not moving through its full range of motion properly, and thus the structures surrounding the joint, including nerves, are negatively impacted.
Benefits of Chiropractic
Chiropractic care has a wide variety of benefits for animals, including improved joint comfort and mobility, reduced overall levels of pain, improved sensory input to the brain and spinal cord, better blood flow to damaged tissues and organs, and higher levels of energy for play and exercise. Animals benefit from regular chiropractic care, particularly those animals who are athletes or have a job to perform. The positive effects of chiropractic care enhance and synergize very well with those of acupuncture.
What to Expect
Each chiropractic session involves reviewing the patient’s history and performing a chiropractic exam, which includes “motion palpation” of joints to determine where they are not moving well. The session may also involve a gait analysis of the pet while moving around the exam room or clinic. Chiropractic adjustments will be made to the joints and surrounding tissues by imparting a thrust, impulse, or mobilizing massage. Rehabilitation exercises may be recommended to be performed at home. Dietary recommendations will also be made, as nutrition is a vital component of a pet’s overall health and longevity. The initial chiropractic appointment is scheduled for 45 minutes and follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.
Chiropractic Fees
- Initial Chiropractic Consultation (45 minutes) - $165
- Follow-up Chiropractic Session (30 minutes) - $85
Frequently Asked Questions
Acupuncture and chiropractic care are two holistic therapies increasingly recognized for their benefits in treating various health conditions in animals. Acupuncture, a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), uses small needles to stimulate specific points on the body, aiming to restore balance and promote healing. Chiropractic care focuses on the alignment and function of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, to improve overall health and well-being. Both therapies can be used individually or in conjunction with Western medical treatments to provide comprehensive care and achieve optimal health outcomes for animals. Below, we address some frequently asked questions about these alternative therapies.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that involves inserting very small needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, to restore balance and treat various conditions.
How does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture stimulates points on the body that correspond to areas with a high density of nerve fibers, blood vessels, lymphatics, and mast cells. This stimulation causes the release of pain-relieving neurotransmitters, increases local blood flow, improves immune responses, and enhances the activity of stem cells to help damaged tissues heal and repair.
What conditions can Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions in animals, including pain management, arthritis, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, skin conditions, and more. It is often used alongside Western medical treatments to provide the best possible health outcomes.
What is Chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care focuses on the alignment and function of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, to enhance overall health and well-being.
What are the benefits of Chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care improves joint comfort and mobility, reduces overall levels of pain, enhances sensory input to the brain and spinal cord, improves blood flow to damaged tissues and organs, and increases energy levels for play and exercise. It is especially beneficial for animals who are athletes or have a job to perform.
How does Chiropractic care work with other treatments?
The positive effects of chiropractic care enhance and synergize well with those of acupuncture, providing a comprehensive approach to improving an animal’s health and quality of life.
